Manitou Reflections - First Year Counselor at Orientation

I cannot believe how jam-packed orientation has been so far! Our days have been filled with learning all about the situations we will encounter this summer. I think I finally have mastered the Manitou lingo and I definitely have a better feel for what a summer will be like here. At the beginning of the week I was nervous about how to comfort a homesick camper or what to do if campers are involved in bullying; however, we have covered all of this and so much more in our training. We have talked with all the directors and unit leaders as well as lawyers, nurses, doctors, and other trained professionals in order to be prepared and confident for the season to begin. I think all of the staff would agree when I say that I am ready and excited for the kids to finally arrive!

A few days ago we were assigned to our bunks; I have been assigned to the Sophomore Unit and I couldn’t be happier! My co-counselors are awesome and very diverse! We represent the US, Ireland, England, and Spain. After some initial debate, our cabin layout is finally settled and starting to look very homey.

Orientation hasn’t been all work and no play though. I’m really getting a sense of what Manitou is all about from some of the fun activities we have been doing. We did a counselor College League that was used to be an example of the College League we will be a part of this summer. As the Newspaper counselor and a generally more creatively based person, it was such a challenge and delight to be able to play volleyball, soccer, baseball, and tennis during the week. We had a talent show, our first swim down at the waterfront, and went out for a fun night of bowling.

The weather has been rainy and cold for the last couple of days, but the sun will be out tomorrow and we are all ready for our campers to arrive!

- Leah Amesse, first year staff member.
